Welcome to Your Weekly News Brief!

Peter Brown (Flair UK) and Mary Couzin.jpg

Happy Bloomin' Friday!

This week, we sadly lost a true toy industry legend — Peter Brown. Toy World’s tribute beautifully captures both the heart and highlights of Peter’s extraordinary life and career. Over the years, he received numerous accolades, including our 2012 TAGIE Hassenfeld Family Humanitarian Award, which he accepted alongside his son Andrew for their incredible work with the UK Toy Trust. Ellie Hassenfeld Block introduced them with warmth and admiration, noting, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” Peter’s moving acceptance speech, which included a heartfelt tribute to Andrew, is sure to bring tears to your eyes — as is Andrew’s speech, where he shared the story of rowing a small boat across the Atlantic to raise money for children in need.

I had the great pleasure of spending time with Peter on a few memorable occasions in the UK. On one visit to Flair Products, Tanya Thompson and I met him at the nearby train stop. Peter welcomed us warmly, guided us along a walking shortcut (where the photo was taken), gave us a tour after our meeting, and made me a cup of coffee before walking us back to the station. I can still see him waving goodbye from the platform. On another visit, he joined Peggy Brown and me for a wonderful, lingering lunch in Oxford — filled with stories I could have listened to for hours.

Peter’s kindness, insight, and genuine passion for the toy world touched so many lives. He will be deeply missed. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Andrew and the entire Brown family.

Person of the Week - Mary Meyer's Steven Meyer

MOMENTUM is Everything!

In Steven Meyer Studio 2.jpg
mary meyer _logo.webp

Hi Steven! Thank you for creating tBR cartoons for our readers and now sharing a bit of yourself with our readers. What do you do in our industry?

I lead the design department at Mary Meyer Stuffed Toys. With the help of our toys, we try to get the biggest oohs and aahs at baby showers and birthday parties.

What is your claim to fame?

Years and years of continuing my grandmother’s legacy of creating and selling endearing toys. We have great teams here. Designers, salespeople, pickers. packers, and all the support staff needed to keep our family-run, 92 year old company going strong.

Do you have a mantra you live by?

I can’t say I live by it every moment, but if I were to give a commencement address, I’d say “MOMENTUM is everything!” There is no denying the physics of momentum (it takes more energy to get in the air than to keep flying).  It’s also psychological… it’s crucial to have projects that need your attention. It’s the work that keeps me going.

Why and how did you get into the Toy and Game industry?

Believe it or not, I was born into the toy business. My grandmother was Mary Meyer. Our family’s toy factory was right behind our house in Vermont. I was surrounded by cutters, seamstresses, stuffers, and shippers. Looking back, it was totally unique.     Read More...

Make Yourself Heard with this Powerful, Zero-Cost PR Strategy

Andrew Darlow POP Profile.png
listen notes.jpg

Getting your message heard today can seem overwhelming, whether you’re announcing a new toy or game, or helping spread the word about how a nonprofit organization is helping others.

After sharing my photographs, tips, and personal stories with millions through podcasts, radio shows, magazines, and TV—including Animal Planet, The Costco Connection (USA and South Korean editions), Woman’s World, Reader’s Digest, and People Magazine—I’m excited to highlight my favorite zero-cost PR strategy.

These actionable tips are designed to to help you elevate your voice and/or more effectively share the stories of your colleagues or clients.

One of the most effective PR tools I've found is ListenNotes.com, a free podcast search website (and much more!). If you’ve ever been a guest on a podcast, even years ago, Listen Notes can help you track down those appearances and showcase them in many different ways.

What makes Listen Notes so valuable is its robust search functionality. By simply entering your name (I recommend using quotation marks for better accuracy), you can often pull up a list of podcasts you’ve appeared on. Utilizing past interviews can both boost your credibility, and also provide you with content you can repurpose for your website, social media, speaker promo materials and more.     Read More...

Commentary - CARVE COMMUNICATIONS’ SCOTT GOLDBERG

BREAKS DOWN GENCON & TALKS MEDIA EXPOSURE AT EXCLUSIVE EVENT

SCott Goldberg Carve_edited.png
carve_communications_inc__logo_edited.jpg

Gen Con, the largest and longest-running tabletop gaming convention, had a record-breaking attendance of over 71,000 in 2024, with more than 500 exhibitors attracting a rather unique audience combination of manufacturers, reps, buyers, consumers, influencers and traditional media. There aren’t a lot of industry events, let alone at that size, that bring together such an incredible mix. Similarly, when you think about all the categories Gen Con features, it’s also pretty diverse and impressive: you’ve got strategy games, licensed and unlicensed (or original IP), dice games, card games, brain teasers, cooperative games, family friendly games, party games, adult only games and so much more.

Gen Con checks a lot of boxes when it comes to delivering a good, if not great, experience for almost everyone in attendance. However, based on our research, what’s been lacking is a dedicated experience that helps brands get access to the media and influencers on site.  The show is massive, similar to Toy Fair, so breaking through the noise at the show is paramount. While there are game nights and of course brands have the ability to schedule media appointments during the show and some brands as well as media do benefit from that, in our experience, that’s simply just not enough anymore. On the show floor the media are fighting for access to check out the products and learn about the game play, they’re competing with buyers, brand fans and consumers that in many cases take priority, right or wrong, over the media.     Read More...

Financial Reporting, Tariffs

Bloomberg Podcast:  A "$600 billion tax bill."  That's how Learning Resources CEO Rick Woldenberg describes the impact of tariffs on American businesses. President Trump insists foreign countries and companies pay the tariffs. Woldenberg, head of a family-owned business that sells popular kids toys at Target and on Amazon, calls it a "plain old untruth" – he pays it, and ultimately, so do American consumers.

Congressman Suhas Subramanyam (D -VA) introduced this year’s latest (and not so greatest) toy: Tariff Bear. Although he is cute and cuddly, Tariff Bear costs three times the amount of a regular stuffed bear. Why? Because President Trump’s onslaught of tariffs has raised the prices of children’s toys across the country, even though he promised to lower costs.

A Toy Maker Sued Trump Over Tariffs and Won. Its Operations Are Still in Tatters. CEO Rick Woldenberg is moving equipment out of China and saying that ‘no one’s going to save me’.

Toys are getting pricier as tariffs kick in. Toy prices are rising at their fastest pace on record, the result of stiff new tariffs in an industry where 3 out of 4 items come from China — one of the first examples of just how quickly new trade policies are raising prices for Americans.

Katherine Li captures the real-world business impact of tariffs in this new as-told-to piece for Business Insider, featuring Learning Resources and hand2mind CEO Rick Woldenberg. From scrapped investments to tough choices facing companies, this story puts the ripple effects into perspective.

The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a request from two toy companies to expedite their challenge to President Donald Trump’s tariffs. The ruling from the nation’s high court means that the Trump administration now has the standard 30-day window to file its response to the challenge.

“We just couldn’t do it anymore,” said Rodrigues, who founded Merci Milo in 2015. “I’m still getting these tariff bills. I don’t know how we’re going to survive the next few months.” Merci Milo is the latest in a string of recent and oncoming toy store closures. Last month, family-owned Hammer and Jacks closed after 8 yrs, and MudPuddles Toys & Books announced plans to close its Northwest Portland location later...
