Commentary: The Toy Association's Kimberly Carcone
Come One, Come All to LA’s Toy District this Fall!
When The Toy Association first announced our plans to have a presence in Los Angeles in September, our goal was to provide more companies with a space to do business in the heart of LA's "toy district" during what's proven to be a critical preview time of year for our industry. We're excited to announce that part one of delivering on this goal has come to fruition: The Toy Association's inaugural LA Fall Preview is officially sold out, with 78 top toy companies securing space at 2250 East Imperial Highway in El Segundo.
We are grateful for the enthusiastic response we've received thus far, and our team continues to be hard at work on the next step: ensuring 2250 East Imperial Highway is a crucial stop for buyers and decision-makers on their fall preview circuit.
Open all of September to accommodate vendor meetings, the building will serve as a particularly essential hub of activity during The Toy Association's LA Fall Preview market week from September 9 to 13, supplemented by philanthropic and networking events.
Here’s a breakdown of the activities and resources available during market week:

Toy Photography - Out OF The Toy Box
I’m thrilled to share the opening of my solo toy photography exhibition, "Out of the Toybox: The Toy Photography of Mitchel Wu," at the renowned Science Museum Oklahoma. This 400,000 square-foot museum attracts 600,000 visitors annually and is recognized by Newsweek Magazine as one of the best science museums in the U.S. It’s the perfect venue for an
exhibition that appeals to all ages and celebrates creativity and play.
"Out of the Toybox" is the first exhibition of its kind and scale, featuring over 50 prints displayed throughout the gallery. It also features 12 behind-the-scenes setups, giving viewers an inside look at how I craft my images. It's astonishing to see the actual setups in person, contrasted with the final images on the wall. Together, they demonstrate the magic and unlimited possibilities of toy photography.
Seeing both kids and adults engage with my work in person, rather than just scrolling through images on a phone screen, has been incredibly rewarding. Additionally, there is a toy photography experience zone where guests can try their hand at toy photography. The exhibition runs for 15 months and concludes in August 2025.

Essay 2 - The Value of Toys
Toys are machines around which play is created.
Toys have influenced many important designers and artists
Toys matter to all of us and to the world as a whole
Creating and bringing toys to market is like delivering nutritious food to the brains of children everywhere to help them grow and develop to their greatest potentials. This matters, because the brains we are feeding will one day feed the world.
In Inventing Kindergarten, by Norman Brosterman, you find some great examples of the influence of ‘toys’. Many of the twentieth century’s greatest artists, designers, architects, and visionaries, Mondrian and Frank Lloyd Wright are two examples, were influenced by play with these toys created by the inventor of the first Kindergarten in Europe.
Nobel-prize-winning scientist Sir Harry Kroto once remarked in a BBC that one of the disasters of modern life is that the Erector Set has been displaced by Legos. While others may disagree about the Lego analogy, what he is saying is the profound result society gets from play with toys. READ MORE...

How Playing Games Shaped Our Species. Games are an extraordinary invention. Jürgen Stöhr. died on 28th April 2024. H was a businessman and entrepreneur, was a mainstay of the German Toy & Games market for many years and invented the classic family game Kniffel.
The European Games market owes much to Jürgen and his family, who were the final owners of Schmidt Spiel & Freizeit. The company was initially founded 1907 by Jürgen’s grandfather, Josef Friedrich Schmidt, an entrepreneur and an inventor of games who was inspired by the antique predecessors of their modern-day counterparts. Josef invented some of Europe’s most popular board games under the Schmidt Spiel banner, including Mensch Ärgere Dich Nicht (Take It Easy), Ludo and Paschisi.
In 1970, Schmidt Spiel joined forces with board game company Franz Schmidt to create Schmidt Spiel & Freizeit. The company flourished thanks co-owner Jürgen’s experience in product development, sales and marketing. With Kniffel, which is often described as ‘poker with dice’, he created a massively successful product in the German game market which ultimately saw Schmidt Spiel & Freizeit become the second largest toy and game producer in the region. The company had subsidiaries in France, Austria and the Netherlands, while the the rest of Europe was under franchise agreement. Read More...

Eugene “Gene” Hendel passed away on June 30, 2024. Gene was a man who was anything but ordinary, and it makes no sense to write a generic obituary for a legend such as him. He’s probably shaking his head right now, saying, “I asked for simple!”
Gene spent 50 years in the toy industry, working with giants like Kenner, Mattel, Hasbro, and Tiger Electronics. His family was so proud when he decided to launch his own company, Gene Hendel Associates, as a manufacturer’s rep. It was a huge leap of faith with a wife, two kids, and a dog to care for, but given his stellar reputation and work ethic, he thrived and became more successful than ever.

His business was not just a career but a reflection of his personal joy and enthusiasm for collectibles.
