Ron Oliver - Developing Games – Virtual Games Detailed Feedback vs. Physical Games Limited Feedback.

Developing games – virtual games detailed feedback vs. physical games limited feedback. I would like to share with you my experience on the difference between developing mobile casual games vs. developing toys & games, with respect to the available data analysis. I work as a game developer for a successful casual mobile games company during the day and invent physical toys & games at nights. If someone will ask me what is the key factor for creating a successful casual mobile game – I will have a simple answer: iterations and analytics. Obviously, the casual mobile game must meet the natural characteristics of having a great game play; having a cool theme and be fun to play with – but these

Rachel Griffin -A Mermaid that is a "JAKK” of all Trades!

What do you do in the industry? I am the vice president of public relations for JAKKS Pacific, which means I am a “JAKK” of all trades. My day-to-day consists of managing all consumer facing messaging and corporate communications, social media, influencer outreach, events / experiential marketing, investor relations, as well as JAKKS Cares, the philanthropic arm of JAKKS Pacific. I’m really quite lucky -- I get paid to be a big kid -- it’s a dream job! Every day is different and I’m always learning something new. What are you working on now? August into September kicks off my “busy season,” which runs through March/April. Right now we are managing long lead gift guide and toy award subm

Phil Jackson - Sacred Story Sermon – Spirituality of Play

Since "retiring in 2016, I have gotten very involved with our local Congregational Church. I was asked to speak with the Confirmation Class of teenagers about the Spirituality of Play. Our Minister, Amy, thought it was a great message and asked me to deliver it as a summer sermon. Here's what I came up with... Good morning! Thank you Amy for inviting me to share my story today. My story is about the Spirituality of Play and I hope to share my thoughts about how, through Play, we praise God. A Career at Play I am a lucky guy. I had a 30 year career in the Game and Toy Industry. And although it’s not all fun and games, it’s as close as a business can get to it. I worked for Coleco on Cabb

Lori Orlinsky - Being Small (Isn’t So Bad After All)

What do you do in the industry? I wrote a children’s book called “Being Small (Isn’t So Bad After All),” which was released by Mascot Books in April, 2019. “Being Small” is a rhyming picture book about a little girl who doesn’t want to go to school because she’s the shortest in her class. What and/or who inspires you? My 6-year-old daughter, Hayley. When she was three years old, her teachers hung up a growth chart in her preschool classroom. While her friends’ names fell at the top and middle of the chart, Hayley was all the way at the bottom, with no other names in sight. It was the first time that she realized she was different. I searched for a book with a short heroine who Hayley could

Alex Fuhrer - Business in Japan and Hong Kong, Kawada, Longshore

(Alex at Kite and Rocket in NY) In 2016 I started working at Nextoy, a New York based company that specializes in getting new toy and game ideas produced. Nextoy collaborates with inventors and global toy companies to bring innovative new products to the market. This led me to a recent opportunity to work in both Japan and Hong Kong with Kawada, an influential Japanese toy company and wholesaler, and at Longshore, perhaps the world's leading games factory in HK and China. Japanese business culture is fundamentally different from Western culture, which can lead to awkward misunderstandings. On my first day at Kawada’s office, I was brought floor to floor to meet every division of the company

Alex Pariente - BiOBUDDi, Troublemaker, Dad, Accents, College Not for Everyone

What do you do in the industry? We encourage play in a world of screens. Our mission at Safari Ltd is to teach children the importance of nature and its conservation through the joy of play. We’re a family operated company for over 30 years now! I’m the proud third generation owner of this amazing place. What is your claim to fame in the industry? I think it’s our quality and imagination. We work relentlessly to make our figurines as detailed as possible and they last a long time. Many of our SafariFans, myself included, have passed down their favorite toys to their kids and grandkids. We also choose really exciting animals to create, both from nature and our imagination. We’re constantly ev
